The Peninsula Dog Fanciers’ Club, Inc. has a long standing relationship with the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office and their Patrol K9 Unit. Deputies from the K9 unit have provided security at our annual All Breed Dog Show and Obedience and Rally Trials in March. They have also given demonstrations at our semi-annual Responsible Dog Ownership Day event in September, as well as showing their support at the Bremerton Farmers Market Dog Day in July of 2012.

PDFC has supported the Kitsap County K9 Unit in the past with monetary donations to purchase K9 Ajax and to purchase a custom safety vest for Ajax. PDFC has given back to the greater community with donations to purchase dogs for the Poulsbo Police Department and the Bremerton Police Department. We donated to the Aberdeen Police Department to keep one of their K9’s on duty after budget cuts were made that would have required an early retirement for the dog. Additional programs supported by Peninsula Dog Fanciers include the  Kitsap County Search and Rescue, Kitsap County Dog 4H Programs (including a new yearly award given to any outstanding youth to offset their activity costs), Washington State University Veterinary School (scholarship), Kitsap County Fairgrounds (multiple donations for grounds improvements), the Prison Pet Partnership Program and many others since the club’s beginning in 1950.

Deputy Joe Hedstrom, K9 Ajax’s handler, contacted PDFC when it became clear that Ajax would need to be medically retired. Deputy Hedstrom wasn’t ready to leave the K9 Unit himself. The members of PDFC readily agreed to help the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office purchase a new K9 partner for Deputy Hedstrom with a monetary donation of $5,000. PDFC President Joanne Duncan and Vice President/Treasurer Diane Burlingame presented the $5,000 check to the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office at the Kitsap County Commissioners Meeting on December 10, 2012, along with a check for $1,500 as a “thank you” for the service K9 Ajax provided the County and its citizens during his four years on the job.
